Economic Incentives and the Pattern of the Australian Tariff

Abstract:
The extent to which special interest groups influence the tariff depends on the incentive these groups have to seek tariff protection. This is demonstrated using data and parameters from the ORANI general equilibrium model of the Australian economy to provide empirical support to an attempt to better assess the role of economic incentives in tariff formulation. Other principal findings are that the determinants of the impacts of tariff protection influence the structure of the tariff and that an industry's linkages with other industries (both domestic and foreign) affect its level of tariff protection.
