Models of Product Differentiation
Michael Waterson
Bulletin of Economic Research, 1989, vol. 41, issue 1, 1-27
Abstract:
This paper surveys literature on models of horizontal and vertical product differentiation, focusing upon insights into market behavior that would otherwise be puzzling, and also covering social welfare analyses and implications. Both H. Hotelling's and E. H. Chamberlin's approaches to horizontal product differentiation are discussed and extended. The modern literature on vertical product differentiation is placed within a historical perspective.
