Economic Papers, 2015, vol. 34, issue 1-2, 36-47

Abstract: type="main" xml:id="ecpa12093-abs-0001">

This study develops a model of household energy consumption using data from the ABS 2012 Household Energy Consumption Survey. Using a reduced-form equation approach, household energy consumption is found to be influenced by income, energy price, location and other household and dwelling characteristics. The price elasticity of household energy demand is found to be inelastic. Treating household insulation as endogenous rejects the rebound effect hypothesis. The paper also suggests further research directions when additional survey data become available.
