Abstract: type="main" xml:id="ecpa12117-abs-0001">

The Economic Society of Australia (ESA) embarked upon a plan to create a National Economic Panel (NEP) and an online public policy polling platform in late 2013. In early October 2015, the outcome of the first poll of the ESA NEP was released with a question on the best way to reform Australia's goods and services tax. The results created great interest and set the stage for a significant contribution by the ESA and NEP to ongoing policy discourse in Australia. This paper documents the reasons for the formation of the ESA NEP, some of the details of its creation, how the ESA NEP evolved into the National Economic Forum joint venture with the Monash Business School and what plans the ESA has for the ESA NEP in the future.
