Distinguished Fellow of the Economic Society of Australia, 2004: Helen Hughes

Glenys Byrne

The Economic Record, 2005, vol. 81, issue 252, 1-10

Abstract: Professor Helen Hughes AO received the Economic Society's Distinguished Fellow Award at the 33rd Annual Conference of Economists in Sydney in September 2004. The citation focused on three areas where she has had major impacts: the economics of development, Australian economic policy, and institutions that further economic knowledge and debate. Helen Hughes was one of the first economists to recognise the importance of export‐orientated growth to rapid and equitable development. Australia's third‐largest services export industry, education, emerged from her advocacy in 1984 of a policy of selling education to overseas students. Her skill in teaching economics remains legendary.
