Economic History Review, 1951, vol. 3, issue 3, 265-278
Abstract:
The aim of these notes is to examine the uses of statistical data in the study of long‐term changes in the economies of nations. They deal with the general characteristics of data serving as raw material for the study of historical change; the specific characteristics of statistical data; the ways in which these diverse raw materials are organized in systematic accounts; the easy pitfalls in generalizing from statistics; and, in conclusion, the possibilities of statistical analysis of economic growth during the recent stretch of human history.
