 What's Past is Prologue: Twenty Years of EuroChoices AnalysedDavid Blandford and Martin Banse EuroChoices, 2021, vol. 20, issue 1, 4-10 Abstract: This article analyses the content of EuroChoices since its launch in 2001 using textual analysis and a classification of subject matter. The results illuminate the wide coverage of topical issues in agricultural and related policies in the journal. While the focus has been predominantly on Europe and the European Union’s CAP has been a major focus of analysis, there has been considerable coverage of policies in other geographical areas, such as the United States. Over time, the emphasis of contributions has broadened from price and income support policies to those in other areas, including innovation and competitiveness, the environment, rural development, climate change, animal health and welfare, and nutrition and human health. Special Issues and Special Sections have been used to provide in‐depth treatment of topical issues, most recently Brexit and Covid‐19. Many contributions have demonstrated how improvements in data, information and analytical methods (both quantitative and qualitative) can help to illuminate policy issues. The analysis provides important lessons for the future content of the journal. These are: up‐to‐date provision of policy information and analysis; topical treatment of emerging issues; the provision of multiple perspectives on policy options; and in particular the presentation of the results of qualitative and quantitative economic analysis in an understandable form. Cet article analyse le contenu d'EuroChoices depuis son lancement en 2001 à l'aide d'une analyse textuelle et d'une classification des sujets. Les résultats mettent en lumière la large couverture dans la revue des questions d'actualité sur les politiques agricoles et connexes. L’accent a été principalement mis sur l’Europe, avec la PAC de l’Union européenne au centre de l’analyse, mais les politiques dans d’autres zones géographiques, comme les États‐Unis, ont été largement traitées. Au fil du temps, l’objet des contributions s'est élargi, passant des politiques de soutien des prix et des revenus à celles d'autres domaines, y compris l'innovation et la compétitivité, l'environnement, le développement rural, le changement climatique, la santé et le bien‐être des animaux, la nutrition et la santé humaine. Des numéros et des sections spéciaux ont été utilisés pour fournir un traitement approfondi de questions d'actualité, plus récemment le Brexit et la Covid‐19. De nombreuses contributions ont montré comment l’amélioration des données, des informations et des méthodes analytiques (tant quantitatives que qualitatives) peut aider à éclairer les questions de politique. L'analyse fournit des leçons importantes pour le contenu futur de la revue. Ce sont : la présentation à jour d'informations et d'analyses sur les politiques ; le traitement d'actualité des problèmes émergents ; la présentation de multiples perspectives sur les options de politiques et, en particulier, la présentation des résultats d'analyses économiques qualitatives et quantitatives sous une forme compréhensible. In diesem Artikel wird der Inhalt von EuroChoices mit Hilfe von Textanalysen und einer Klassifizierung der Themenbereiche seit dem Start der Zeitschrift im Jahr 2001 untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen die umfassende Behandlung aktueller agrarpolitischer Themen und verwandter Bereiche in der Zeitschrift auf. Während der Fokus überwiegend auf Europa lag und die GAP ein wesentlicher Forschungsschwerpunkt war, wurden auch Politiken in anderen Regionen, wie z. B. den Vereinigten Staaten, ausführlich behandelt. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sich der Fokus der Beiträge von Politiken zur Preis‐ und Einkommensstützung auf andere Bereiche ausgeweitet. Darunter sind Innovation und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, Umwelt, ländliche Entwicklung, Klimawandel, Tiergesundheit und Tierwohl sowie Ernährung und Gesundheit. In Sonderausgaben und speziellen Rubriken wurden aktuelle Themen vertieft behandelt, wie zuletzt der Brexit und Covid‐19. Zahlreiche Beiträge haben gezeigt, wie Verbesserungen im Hinblick auf Daten, Informationen und Untersuchungsmethoden (sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ) helfen können, politische Fragen zu beantworten. Die Untersuchung liefert wichtige Erkenntnisse für die zukünftigen Inhalte der Zeitschrift. Hierzu gehört die Bereitstellung aktueller politischer Informationen und Analysen, die zeitnahe Behandlung neu aufkommender Themen, die Vermittlung verschiedener Sichtweisen auf politische Optionen und insbesondere die Darstellung der Ergebnisse aus qualitativen und quantitativen wirtschaftlichen Analysen in verständlicher Form.
