 Modelling in Support of Better Agricultural and Food Policies: the JRC's Integrated Agro‐economic Modelling platform (iMAP)Jesus Barreiro‐Hurle, Thomas Fellmann and Robert M'barek EuroChoices, 2024, vol. 23, issue 1, 43-53 Abstract: Research in the area of agro‐economic modelling has been one of the key contributions of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) to the development of better agri‐food policies in the EU. This article provides an overview of the development of the JRC's integrated agro‐economic modelling platform since its establishment in 2005. We highlight the main contributions to policy analysis and describe in detail two key areas, namely the provision of medium‐term projections for agricultural markets and the analysis of various CAP proposals. Furthermore, we describe the gradual shift to expand the capabilities of individual models within the platform to encompass aspects beyond traditional agro‐economic aspects and incorporate environmental considerations. Model integration remains a focus both within the platform at different levels and scales, and in conjunction with biophysical models. This, together with incorporating knowledge from other fields of economic analysis is fundamental to capture changing policy objectives. La recherche dans le domaine de la modélisation agroéconomique a été l'une des principales contributions du Centre commun de recherche (JRC) au développement de meilleures politiques agroalimentaires dans l'Union européenne. Cet article donne un aperçu du développement de la plateforme de modélisation agroéconomique intégrée du JRC depuis sa création en 2005. Nous mettons en évidence les principales contributions à l'analyse des politiques et décrivons en détail deux domaines clés, à savoir la fourniture de projections à moyen terme pour les marchés agricoles et l'analyse de diverses propositions pour la PAC. En outre, nous décrivons l’évolution progressive vers une extension des capacités des modèles individuels au sein de la plateforme à englober des questions allant au‐delà des aspects agroéconomiques traditionnels et intégrer des considérations environnementales. L'intégration des modèles reste une priorité à la fois au sein de la plateforme à différents niveaux et échelles, et en conjonction avec les modèles biophysiques. Ceci, combiné à l'intégration des connaissances issues d'autres domaines de l'analyse économique, est fondamental pour saisir l’évolution des objectifs de l'action publique. Die Forschung auf dem Gebiet der agrarökonomischen Modellierung ist einer der wichtigsten Beiträge der Gemeinsamen Forschungsstelle (englisch: Joint Research Centre = JRC) der Europäischen Kommission zur Entwicklung einer besseren EU‐Agrar‐ und Ernährungspolitik. Dieser Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der integrierten agrarökonomischen Modellierungsplattform der JRC seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2005. Wir zeigen die wichtigsten Beiträge zur Politikanalyse und beschreiben ausführlich zwei Schlüsselbereiche: die Bereitstellung mittelfristiger Prognosen für die Agrarmärkte und die Analyse verschiedener GAP‐Strategien. Darüber hinaus beschreiben wir die schrittweise Erweiterung einzelner Modelle innerhalb der Plattform, die über die klassischen agrarökonomischen Aspekte hinausgehen und Umweltaspekte mit einbeziehen. Die Modellintegration bleibt ein Schwerpunkt sowohl innerhalb der Plattform als auch in Verbindung mit biophysikalischen Modellen. Dies und die Einbeziehung von Erkenntnissen aus anderen Bereichen der Wirtschaftsanalyse sind von grundlegender Bedeutung, um sich verändernde politische Ziele zu erfassen.
