Poverty in Canada: Does Manufacturing Matter?

Abstract: We focus our research on this question: Does an expansion in the percentage of labour employed in the manufacturing sector lead to reductions in the poverty rate? While some research suggests that regional differences in the employment share of the manufacturing sector explain variation in poverty rates, we do not find empirical evidence of this poverty-ameliorating effect in our regression analysis of Canadian Census Districts between the years 2001 and 2006.
