Abstract:
Although weather conditions are known to affect the frequency of outbreaks of outdoor fires, information on the connection between weather and fires in buildings has been lacking. In this analysis of fires in buildings in England and Wales during 1951–61 changes between seasons and between years have been allowed for in order to remove the effect of normal changes in human behavioural patterns upon the incidence and spread of fire. The residual variations show that sunshine and rainfall affect both the incidence and the spread of fire in buildings, while vapour pressure affects fire incidence but not fire spread.
