Design of Multi‐Stage Surveys for the Estimation of Sampling Errors

James Durbin

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1967, vol. 16, issue 2, 152-164

Abstract: A method is described for the selection of two sampling units without replacement with probability of inclusion proportional to size. Procedures are discussed for the estimation of sampling variances when the method is used for the selection of first‐stage units in multi‐stage sampling. An alternative and simpler approximate method is also discussed.
