Trends in Hearing Loss Associated with Age or Exposure to Noise

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1968, vol. 17, issue 3, 205-213

Abstract: Hearing may deteriorate as a result of prolonged exposure to noise. Studies of this loss must allow for deterioration associated with age. Jute weavers in Dundee provided a stable population subjected to noise over periods up to 50 years, and school teachers provided a control group to study effects due to age in the absence of industrial noise. One aspect of the analysis of these data is considered. It involves an application of Aitken's method of generalized least squares, and it is pointed out that Rao's concept of inference sufficiency may give guidance on appropriate methods of summarizing the data. A brief indication is given of aspects of the data that might profitably be examined by this method.
