A Method of Cluster Analysis and Some Applications

P. J. Harrison

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1968, vol. 17, issue 3, 226-236

Abstract: The I.C.I. method of Cluster Analysis is a multivariate analysis technique. The first computer program for the method was designed specifically to investigate the correlation between the biological activity of chemical compounds and their molecular structure, and was restricted to the analysis of dichotomous variables and responses. Applications of the program generated interest within I.C.I. and it was suggested that Cluster Analysis could be useful in both the commercial and technical fields. Consequently a second program was designed enabling larger problems to be tackled and extending the analysis to quantitative and multi‐state variables and responses. This paper discusses the original problem for which the method was developed, and comments on its application both to this problem and to a classification problem. An outline of the second program, which will be applied to problems in research, marketing and medicine, is given and several of the practical problems met in applying this method of information analysis are discussed.
