Abstract:
An investigation is made into the distribution of the χ2 statistic in contingency tables of sizes from 5 times 5 down to 3 times 2 when the average expectancies, based on the marginal totals, are about equal, and lie in the range from 1 to 5. Tables of the percentile values required for significance testing are produced and show systematic deviations from those of the χ2 distribution. Similar results are given for testing 5 times 1, 4 times 1 and 3 times 1 frequency tables against the hypothesis of equal expected values.
