A Statistical Approach to the Specification of Plastics

Charles Wainwright

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1952, vol. 1, issue 1, 37-44

Abstract: Although this article is primarily concerned with plastics, the underlying general principles apply to other materials. The usual type of specification, in which each batch of material is accepted or rejected according as its tested quality exceeds or falls below a specified level, presents difficulties. These are overcome in the new B.S. 771 for moulding material by regarding groups of batches as wholes and taking account of variability in quality as well as average levels. Mr. Wainwright proposes a somewhat similar but simplified form of specification suitable for laminated sheets.
