On the Productivity of Machines Tended by a Single Operator

A. D. Joffe

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1971, vol. 20, issue 2, 178-186

Abstract: The classical machine interference problem is dealt with where the repair periods are independent Erlang variates for each service, and the running times are independent and identically distributed exponential variates for each and every machine. A simple numerical procedure has been derived from which the efficiency or productivity of the system can be calculated for any specified conditions. Some tables have been obtained of the operator efficiency for selected combinations of the variables in the problem, and it is shown that Cox's (1954) approximations work well in the particular case studied.
