Abstract:
The Gompertz force of mortality is often used as a theoretical ageing model. A procedure is devised for testing the fit of the Gompertz relation to a set of age‐specific death rates. The statistical techniques used are those of weighted linear regression and marginal likelihood. Selected sex and cause‐specific mortality data from Ontario are used to illustrate the suggested procedures.
