Abstract:
When the χ2 test for independence between rows and columns in a two‐way contingency table is significant, a procedure is described for sequentially identifying those cells which contribute heavily to the χ2 statistic. A 14 times 14 contingency table is used to compare the graphical technique of Fienberg (1969) with this method. An algorithm is presented to estimate the expected values of each cell under the model of quasi‐independence.
