Models for Local and Systemic Effects in Bilateral Systems

Abstract: The apparent symmetry of man and many animals produces situations where we wish to determine the effect of a stimulus, applied to one side, on measurements made on both the left‐ and right‐hand side of the subject. A particular example, arising from a study of the physiology of the mouse during pregnancy, is used to illustrate possible models for such bilateral systems. Data are presented for which previously used linear models are inadequate and alternative non‐linear models are described and fitted.
