Random Occurrence of Stripes in a Fabric

Alan G. Hawkes

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1980, vol. 29, issue 1, 34-38

Abstract: A model is proposed to show how variability in the characteristics of the individual threadlines in a supposedly plain fabric can lead to the appearance of a stripe. The theory of level crossings of a stationary Gaussian process is applied to show that the number of apparent stripes is approximately Poisson distributed with a mean that is a given function of the parameters of the model.
