A Statistical Approach to a Problem of Chemical Manufacture

Abstract:
When a chemical reaction takes place in a laboratory the quantities of the chemicals can be controlled accurately to the equivalent weights and the whole of the ‘input’ chemicals can be used up in the products. When the same reaction occurs on an industrial scale it may be impracticable to control the quantities accurately and usually there is an excess of one or other ‘input’ chemical with a consequent wastage and loss in yield. Mr Muir and Mr Downton deal with the statistics of this situation and show how to calculate the most economical conditions.
