Fore or Five?—The Indexing of a Golf Course

I. G. O Muircheartaigh and J. Sheil

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1983, vol. 32, issue 3, 287-292

Abstract: The primary purpose of this paper is to provide an objective method for ranking the 18 holes of a golf course in order of difficulty. This difficulty is shown to depend on a number of factors, and the dependence of one measure of difficulty on these factors is shown to be adequately described by a logistic function. The expected value of this measure with respect to the empirically derived joint probability distribution of the independent variables is evaluated to provide the required ranking.
