Estimation for the Mixed Exponential Distribution Using Grouped Follow‐Up Data

Abstract: We consider a situation where data are collected at a number of equally spaced census points, on whether or not each individual is still present or has “failed”. A particular individual may already be there at the beginning of data collection or may arrive during the course of the study. Similarly an individual may “fail” during the course of data collection or may still be present when data collection ceases. It is required to fit the mixed exponential distribution to such data in order to take into account the arrival distribution between census points, rather than assuming that arrival concurs with the first census point at which an individual is observed. Such a method is developed and is shown to give a good fit to manpower data from the public sector.
