On a Graphical Method for the Detection of Time‐Dependent Effects of Covariates in Survival Data

Abstract:
Visual information from plots of Aalen's regression functions is compared to regression coefficients from a recently proposed multi‐step and Cox's original proportional hazards model. The results show that regression functions can provide important information that might be missed when only the Cox model is applied. They are also easier to obtain and more flexible than regression coefficients from a multi‐step model. The method is explained in a context of right‐censored survival data, and the generalization to multi‐state survival is outlined.
