A Nonparametric Test for Judges' Bias in an Athletic Competition

M. A. Fligner and J. S. Verducci

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, 1988, vol. 37, issue 1, 101-110

Abstract: A panel of judges views the performances of contestants in random order. The judges independently score each performance on a fixed scale. Do scores from the panel of judges reflect a bias towards an a priori ranking of the contestants, such as a tendency to rank the earlier contestants lower than the later? A nonparametric test based on Kendall's tau‐distance is developed to answer this question. This new test is related to a nonparametric test against ordered alternatives in a randomised complete block design, but it allows for a more general null hypothesis. The test is illustrated on data from the 1986 US National Olympic Festival.
