Prediction of Soil Respiration Rates from Temperature, Moisture Content and Soil Type

Abstract: An analysis is described of a set of data relating soil respiration rates to temperature, moisture content and soil type. A model is formulated in which the mean log‐respiration rate at each site has a quadratic dependence on temperature and a linear dependence on moisture content, with coefficients which vary stochastically between sites of a given type. The mean values of the intercept coefficient, and of the linear dependence on moisture content, are also found to vary significantly between soil types. The model is used to classify the soil types in terms of their differing responses to moisture content, and to develop an empirical Bayes rule for predicting the regression relationship between log‐respiration rate, temperature and moisture content at a new site.
