Terms of Trade and Welfare: Estimates

Abstract: In this paper we evaluate the welfare effects of changes in a country's terms of trade and in its import tariff. Imports are treated as intermediate goods, and the welfare measures which we use are based on production theory and on duality theory with special attention devoted to the setting of international trade theory. Empirical estimates are reported for the United States, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland. In diesem Beitrag schätzen wir die Wohlfahrtseffekte, die sich aus Änderungen in den Terms of Trade und den Importzöllen eines Landes ergeben. Die Importe werden als Zwischenprodukte behandelt, und die verwendeten Wohlfahrtsmasse sind aus der Produktions‐ und Dualitätstheorie unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Ansätze der Theorie des internationalen Handels abgeleitet. Die empirischen Schätzungen beziehen sich auf die Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada, Australien und die Schweiz. Dans cette étude, nous évaluons l'effet de changements des termes de l'échange ou des tarifs douaniers d'une nation sur son bien‐ětre. Les biens importés sont traités comme biens intermtdiaires et les mesures que nous utilisons sont basées sur la théorie de la production et la théorie de la dualité en tenant compte du cadre particulier de la théorie des échanges internationaux. Des estimations empiriques sont présentées pour les Etats‐Unis, le Canada, l'Australie et la Suisse.
