Jevons as Statistician: The Role of Probability

John Aldrich

The Manchester School of Economic & Social Studies, 1987, vol. 55, issue 3, 233-56

Abstract: Stanley Jevons was a pioneer in applying probability to problems in the logic of sc ience. He was also a pioneer of statistical economics. This paper inv estigates the use of probability in his statistical writings. Jevons is found to have made extensive use of probability, although many of his applications are unconvincing. His applications of significance t esting and least squares did not lead him to make innovations in stat istical theory and so his importance does not extend beyond economics to general statistics. Jevons set the pattern for the economist as c onsumer of statistical techniques. Copyright 1987 by Blackwell Publishers Ltd and The Victoria University of Manchester
