Friedrich List and the Critique of "Cosmopolitical Economy."

The Manchester School of Economic & Social Studies, 1988, vol. 56, issue 1, 17-36
Abstract:
While List is well known as an early theorist of economic protectionism, little attention has been given to the problem o f how, at a time when the principles of economic liberalism dictated the adoption of free trade policies, List as a liberal advocated prot ection. Emphasis is placed on the American background to this aspect of List's thinking, as well as on the journalistic nature of his writ ing, in which theoretical argument is at a discount. In conventional accounts of the history of economics, it is theoretical achievement t hat counts; this paper seeks, on the contrary, to demonstrate the imp ortance of practical and journalistic writing to our understanding of past economic systems.
