Abstract:
An Essay on Some General Principles of Political Economy, on Taxes upon Raw Produce, and on Commutation of Tithes (1822) was the third publication to use mathematics in economic analysis in England. Identified only as "E. R.," its author was Edward Rogers (1794?-1824). This article investigates Rogers's inductive method; his treatment of exchange value; wage theory; the incidence of taxes on agricultural products; and the economic consequences, treated mathematically, of a commutation of the tithe. Finally, Rogers's influence and his role in the Whewell Group of Mathematical Economists is considered. Copyright 1991 by Blackwell Publishers Ltd and The Victoria University of Manchester
