Alfred Marshall and the Whewell Group of Mathematical Economists

The Manchester School of Economic & Social Studies, 1993, vol. 61, issue 4, 439-41
Abstract:
The Cambridge mathematician and philosopher William Whewell wrote pioneering papers on the price elasticity of demand and supply, Giffen goods, and the mathematical formulation of David Ricardo's system. There has been considerable speculation about the relationship between Whewell's work and Alfred Marshall. This paper demonstrates that Marshall was acquainted with Whewell's papers on mathematical economics. Copyright 1993 by Blackwell Publishers Ltd and The Victoria University of Manchester
