Does a local knowledge base in Industry 3.0 foster diversification in Industry 4.0 technologies? Evidence from European regions

Abstract: The aim of the paper is to shed light on the role played by regional knowledge bases in Industry 3.0 in fostering new technologies in Industry 4.0 in European regions (NUTS 3) over the period 1991–2015. We find that 4.0 technologies appear to be quite related to 3.0 technologies, with some heterogeneity among different technology fields. The paper investigates the geographical implications. We find that the probability of developing Industry 4.0 technologies is higher in regions that are specialized in Industry 3.0 technologies. However, other types of knowledge bases also sustain regional diversification in Industry 4.0 technologies. El objetivo de este artículo es dilucidar el papel que desempeñan las bases de conocimiento regionales de la Industria 3.0 en el fomento de las nuevas tecnologías de la Industria 4.0 en las regiones europeas (NUTS 3) durante el periodo 1991–2015. Se encontró que las tecnologías 4.0 parecen estar bastante relacionadas con las tecnologías 3.0, mostrando cierta heterogeneidad entre los distintos campos tecnológicos. El artículo investiga las implicaciones geográficas. Se encontró que la probabilidad de que se desarrollen tecnologías de la Industria 4.0 es mayor en las regiones especializadas en tecnologías de la Industria 3.0. Sin embargo, otros tipos de bases de conocimiento también apoyan la diversificación regional en las tecnologías de la Industria 4.0. 本稿では、1991~2015年の欧州の地域(NUTS 3)において、インダストリー4.0の新しい技術を育てるうえで、インダストリー3.0における地域のナレッジベースが果たした役割を明らかにする。インダストリー4.0の技術は、3.0の技術と密接に関連しており、技術分野によって幾分かの不均質性があることが分かった。本稿ではまた、地理的な意義を検討する。インダストリー4.0の技術が開発される可能性は、インダストリー3.0の技術に特化した地域で高いことが考えられる。しかし、その他のタイプのナレッジベースも、インダストリー4.0の技術における地域の多様化を支えている。
