Skill‐Relatedness and Regional Economic Development in Spain during the International Crisis and the Post‐Crisis Period

Abstract: The aim of this research was to study the influence of related variety on the economic performance of Spanish provinces during the international crisis (2009–2013) and the post‐crisis period (2014–2018), with the goal of contributing to assess the validity of the skill‐relatedness approach. The research is based on labor flows in a sample of more than one million affiliated workers. Our results confirmed the influence of related variety on the growth of GDP and employment in knowledge‐based industries, in protecting against unemployment, as well as on the creation of new firms, although with marked differences according to the economic cycle. Robustness issues and possible lines of progress using this novel methodology are also discussed. El objetivo de esta investigación fue estudiar la influencia de la variedad relacionada en el desempeño económico de las provincias españolas durante la crisis económica internacional (2009‐2013) y el período posterior a la crisis (2014‐2018), con el fin de contribuir a evaluar la validez del enfoque de afinidad de habilidades. La investigación se basa en los flujos laborales de una muestra de más de un millón de trabajadores afiliados. Los resultados confirmaron la influencia de la variedad relacionada en el crecimiento del PIB y del empleo en las industrias basadas en el conocimiento, en la protección contra el desempleo, así como en la creación de nuevas empresas, aunque con marcadas diferencias según el ciclo económico. También se discuten los problemas de robustez y las posibles líneas de avance en la utilización de esta novedosa metodología. 本稿では、技能関連アプローチの妥当性評価に寄与することを目的として、国際危機(2009~2013年)および危機後の期間(2014~2018年)におけるスペインの各州の経済状況に対する関連ある多様性(related variety)の影響を検討する。本研究は、100万人以上の関連のある労働者のサンプルにおける労働力フローに基づくものである。結果から、経済循環に応じて大きな差があるものの、GDPの成長や知識ベースの産業の雇用に対する関連ある多様性の影響が、失業の防止策や新規企業の設立にも確認された。頑健性に関する問題と、この新しい方法を用いた予想される成長線についても考察する。
