Information communication technology and manufacturing decentralisation in China

Abstract: The advent of the “information age” ushered in renewed expectations of systematic urban spatial structure transformation. However, few studies have quantitatively assessed these changes, especially the decentralisation of manufacturing employment. This paper tests hypotheses regarding the decentralisation–centralisation effect of information and communication technology (ICT) on manufacturing. Further, the work employs an IV‐GMM estimation technique to estimate the models, to alleviate potential bias brought by endogeneity. The results suggest that the adoption of ICT is highly related to the decentralisation of manufacturing employment on the city‐proper scale in China. The conclusion drawn is that ICT has shaped the manufacturing decentralisation of cities in China. El advenimiento de la “era de la información” ha generado nuevas expectativas de transformación sistemática de la estructura espacial urbana. Sin embargo, pocos estudios han evaluado cuantitativamente estos cambios, especialmente la descentralización del empleo en el sector manufacturero. Este artículo pone a prueba las hipótesis relativas al efecto de descentralización‐centralización de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) en la industria manufacturera. Asimismo, el estudio emplea una técnica de estimación IV‐GMM para estimar los modelos, con el fin de aliviar el posible sesgo provocado por la endogeneidad. Los resultados sugieren que la adopción de las TIC está muy relacionada con la descentralización del empleo en el sector manufacturero a escala de ciudad en China. La conclusión que se extrae es que las TIC han dado forma a la descentralización del sector manufacturero de las ciudades en China. 「情報化時代」の到来により、都市空間構造の体系的な転換への新たな期待が生まれた。しかし、こうした変化、特に製造業における雇用の分散化を定量的に評価した研究はほとんど行われていない。本稿では、情報通信技術(ICT)の製造業に対する分散‐集中化の影響に関する仮説を検証する。さらに、ここでは操作変数‐一般化モーメント(IV‐GMM)推定法を用いてモデルを推定し、内生性による潜在的バイアスを軽減した。結果から、ICTの採用が、中国の都市適正規模での製造業の雇用の分散化と強く関連していることが示唆される。ICTが、中国都市部の製造業の分散化を形成したと結論される。
