Convergence heterogeneity at the local level in sub‐Saharan Africa

Abstract: This paper tests for convergence in labour productivity at the local level in 10 sub‐Saharan countries, disaggregated into 1136 administrative entities. This work combines nighttime lights data and a unique set of population censuses to produce local measures of growth, employment and sectoral shares. We find evidence of unconditional convergence across sectors in the range of 2%. However, convergence is heterogeneous and conditional on both manufacturing and services employment shares. Convergence is also associated with proximity to the main city, moderate population density, low land suitability and relatively moderate temperature. Finally, the within effect dominates the between effect. En este artículo se comprueba la convergencia de la productividad laboral a nivel local en 10 países subsaharianos, desagregada en 1136 entidades administrativas. Este trabajo combina datos de luces nocturnas y un conjunto único de censos de población para elaborar medidas locales de crecimiento, empleo y cuotas sectoriales. Se encontraron pruebas de una convergencia no condicionada entre sectores del orden del 2%. Sin embargo, la convergencia es heterogénea y está condicionada por las cuotas de empleo tanto en el sector manufacturero como en el sector servicios. La convergencia también está asociada con la proximidad a la ciudad principal, una densidad de población moderada, una baja aptitud del terreno y una temperatura relativamente moderada. Por último, el efecto interno domina al efecto externo. 本稿では、1,136の行政区からなるサブサハラの10カ国における、地方レベルでの労働生産性の収束を検証する。この研究では、夜間照明データと独自の人口調査を組み合わせて、成長、雇用、産業部門別シェアの地域指標を作成した。部門間における2%の範囲の無条件収束を示すエビデンスが得られた。しかし、収束は不均一であり、製造業とサービス業の両方の雇用シェアは条件付き収束である。収束は、主要都市との近接性、適度な人口密度、低い土地適合性、比較的穏やかな気温とも関連している。また、withinの効果がbetweenの効果よりも大きい。
