INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND THE VIABILITY OF SPATIAL NETWORKS

Abstract: ABSTRACT In this paper the economic system is described as a spatial network economy. The network consists of nodes and links for the interaction between economic activities in each node. New technologies and technical change generate changes m location advantages. The basic hypothesis is that relocation of production and altered trade patterns arc caused by technical options which change Taster than location advantages based on inert infrastructure properties. The introduction of computer based information technology for logistical systems is analysed as a simultaneous change in techniques and network infrastructure. This motivates theoretical inquiries about the viability of spatial networks.
