Geography, market potential and industrialization in Italy 1871–2001

Abstract: This paper deals with industrialization in Italy between 1871 and 2001, and is based on data on the labour force per province (NUTS 3) from population censuses. Particular attention is devoted to long‐term trends and North–South disparities. After the analysis of the geographic spread of industry and its changes, we test the role of access to markets on the distribution of the labour force in manufacturing. The results show that access to markets played a main role in Italian industrialization and in the evolution of inequalities among Northern and Southern regions. El presente documento trata la industrialización en Italia entre 1871 y 2001 y se basa en datos sobre la población activa por provincia (NUTS 3) procedentes de los censos de población. Se presta especial atención a las tendencias a largo plazo y a las disparidades Norte‐Sur. Tras el análisis de la dispersión geográfica de la industria y sus cambios, se pone a prueba el papel del acceso a los mercados en la distribución de la mano de obra en el sector manufacturero. Los resultados muestran que el acceso a los mercados desempeñó un papel fundamental en la industrialización italiana y en la evolución de las desigualdades entre las regiones del Norte y del Sur. 本稿では、1871年から2001年のイタリアにおける産業化について、イタリアの国勢調査の人口統計からのNUTS3に属する県の労働力に関するデータを基に述べる。特に長期間でのトレンドと北部と南部の大きな違いに注目する。産業の地理的分布とその変化を分析した後に製造業における労働力の割合に対する市場へのアクセスの役割を検討する。結果は、イタリアの産業と北部と南部の格差の拡大において、市場へのアクセスが主な役割であることを示している。
