Going the distance: The effects of university – secondary school collaboration on student migration

Abstract: In this paper, we analyse the effect of policy induced collaboration between secondary schools and higher education institutes (HEIs) on student flows in the Netherlands in the area of science and technology. We show that the policy intervention was not only effective but compared to other possible policy measures also quite efficient. We further demonstrate that the strength of collaboration between HEIs and secondary schools significantly reduces the negative effect of geographical distance on the number of students migrating from a particular secondary school to an HEI. En este artículo se analiza el efecto de la colaboración inducida por políticas entre las escuelas secundarias y los institutos de educación superior (IES) sobre los flujos de estudiantes en los Países Bajos en el área de la ciencia y la tecnología. Se demuestra que la intervención de las políticas no solo fue efectiva sino que también fue bastante eficiente, en comparación con otras posibles medidas políticas. Además se demuestra que la fuerza de la colaboración entre los IES y las escuelas secundarias reduce significativamente el efecto negativo de la distancia geográfica en el número de estudiantes que emigran de una escuela secundaria en particular a un IES. 本稿では、オランダの科学技術領域における学生の移動フローに対する、中等学校(secondary school)と高等教育機関(higher education institutes:HEI)の政策主導型のコラボレーションの効果を分析する。政策介入が効果的であっただけでなく、他の政策案と比較してもかなり効率的でもあったことを示す。さらに、HEIと中等学校のコラボレーションの強さが、一部の中等学校からHEIに進学する学生の人数に対する地理的な負の効果を有意に減少させことを実証する。
