The demand for gambling in Italian regions and its distributional consequences

Abstract: In recent years, the Italian gambling market has exploded, leading Italy to become the largest European gambling market and the fourth largest worldwide but the literature on the topic is still limited. This study analyses gambling demand across Italian regions in order to detect how the socio‐economic status of a region impacts the demand for different games. The results reveal that the consumption of each game is unevenly distributed across the northern and southern regions and that gambling products are generally regressive at a regional level; inconsistences emerged between central and sub‐national competences in the organization of the market. Aunque en los últimos años el mercado italiano de los juegos de azar se ha disparado, lo que ha llevado a Italia a convertirse en el mayor mercado de juegos de azar europeo y el cuarto más grande del mundo, la literatura sobre el tema es aún limitada. Este estudio analiza la demanda de los juegos de azar en las regiones italianas para detectar cómo afecta el estado socioeconómico de una región a la demanda de diferentes juegos. Los resultados revelan que el consumo de cada juego se distribuye de manera desigual en las regiones del norte y del sur y que los productos de juegos de azar son generalmente regresivos a nivel regional y que surgieron inconsistencias entre las competencias centrales y subnacionales en la organización del mercado. 近年、イタリアのギャンブル市場は爆発的な活況を呈しており、現在同国はヨーロッパで最大、世界でも4番目に大きなギャンブル市場となったが、このトピックを扱った研究論文はまだ非常に少ない。本稿では、イタリアの全地域におけるギャンブルの需要を分析し、地域の社会経済的状態が、どのようにギャンブルの需要にインパクトを与えるか、ギャンブルのゲームの種類別に検討する。結果から、北部と南部の地域での各ゲームの需要の分布は均等ではなく、ギャンブルの積はたいてい地域レベルでは回帰的である。すなわちこの市場の組織における能力は、中央と地方で一致していない。
