Environmental Engel curves in Italy: A spatial econometric investigation

Abstract: This paper adopts a spatial econometric methodology to investigate the relationship between income and direct household emissions in Italy, as posited by the environmental Engel curve. The spatial approach is motivated by an expanding strand of studies that have detected significant spatial interactions in household‐polluting activities responsible for the generation of direct household emissions. Our results suggest the presence of significant spatial dependence for household emissions emerging among regions. At the same time, increases in the level of income do not seem to be coupled with a higher demand for environmental quality by Italian households. Este artículo adopta una metodología econométrica espacial para investigar la relación entre los ingresos y las emisiones directas de los hogares en Italia, tal como se plantea en la curva ambiental de Engel. El enfoque espacial está motivado por una serie de estudios cada vez mayor que ha detectado importantes interacciones espaciales en las actividades contaminantes de los hogares responsables de la generación de emisiones domésticas directas. Los resultados sugieren la presencia de una dependencia espacial significativa para las emisiones domésticas que surgen entre las regiones. Al mismo tiempo, el aumento del nivel de ingresos no parece ir acompañado de una mayor demanda de calidad ambiental por parte de los hogares italianos. 本稿では、空間計量経済学的方法を用いて、環境エンゲル曲線により仮定した、イタリアにおける所得と家庭からの直接排出量の関連性を検討する。家庭からの直接排出の原因となる家庭の汚染活動における有意な空間的相互作用を検出した研究がさらに増加していることから、空間的アプローチを使用する。結果から、地域間で新たに出現する家庭からの排出の有意な空間依存性が存在することが示唆される。同時に、イタリアの家庭は、所得水準の上昇と環境の質に対する高い要求とを結びつけて考えてはいなようである。
