The geographic evolution of optics technologies in the United States, 1976–2010

Abstract: This research examines the evolution of technology within the optics industry. Optics is the study of the behaviour and transmission of light. We identify core optical technologies using a list of optics‐related keywords and US patent data. Sub‐class data, spanning 3,000 technology fields, enabled the characterization of different branches of knowledge production within optics. The “map equation” is used to represent the evolution of these technological branches across centres of optics innovation in the US. Analysis shows that individual cities specialize in the creation of different kinds of optics technologies, and these technologies take on different evolutionary pathways over time. Esta investigación examina la evolución de la tecnología dentro de la industria óptica. La óptica es el estudio del comportamiento y la transmisión de la luz. Se identificaron las tecnologías ópticas fundamentales mediante una lista de palabras clave relacionadas con la óptica y datos de patentes de los Estados Unidos. Los datos de subclases, que abarcan 3.000 campos tecnológicos, permitieron la caracterización de las diferentes ramas de la producción de conocimiento dentro de la óptica. Para representar la evolución de estas ramas tecnológicas en los focos de innovación óptica de los Estados Unidos se utiliza la “ecuación del mapa” . El análisis muestra que hay ciudades individuales que se especializan en la creación de diferentes tipos de tecnologías ópticas, y que estas tecnologías adoptan diferentes rutas evolutivas a lo largo del tiempo. 本稿では、光学産業における技術の進歩を検討する。光学とは光の振る舞いや移動を研究する分野である。我々は、光学に関連するキーワードと米国の特許データのリストを用いて、光学技術の中心を特定した。3,000の技術分野にわたるサブクラスデータにより、光学分野における様々なナレッジプロダクション部門の特性評価が可能となる。米国の光学イノベーションの中心部におけるこれらの技術部門の進歩を、Map Equationを用いて表す。分析から、それぞれの都市が種類の異なる光学技術の創造に特化していること、そしてその技術によって進歩の経時的過程が異なることが示される。
