Border permeability and socio‐spatial interaction in Turkish and the EU border regions

Abstract: Developing a comprehensive understanding for analysing the relational structure of border regions necessitates the evaluation of different dimensions of socio‐spatial interaction, regarding the border permeability. In this framework, the relationships emerging at the borders of national and supranational bodies can be measured under four different categories of economic, social, political/administrative and spatial. These dimensions identify the permeability of borders by exploring how borders separate or connect each side. Within this context, this study redefines borders non‐normatively by using their separation and connection attribute related with their permeability characteristics. It also analyses the changing characteristics of borders from physical barriers to border regions considering socio‐economic and socio‐spatial interaction. As an empirical study, socio‐spatial interactions that define the selective permeability among supranational bodies, nation states and border regions are investigated at the EU (Bulgaria and Greece) and Turkish borders by conducting in‐depth interviews with actors who have cross border relations. El desarrollo de una noción global para el análisis de la estructura relacional de las regiones fronterizas requiere la evaluación de las diferentes dimensiones de la interacción socio‐espacial, en cuanto a la permeabilidad de las fronteras. En este marco, las relaciones que surgen en las fronteras de los organismos nacionales y supranacionales se pueden medir respecto a cuatro categorías diferentes: económicas, sociales, políticas/administrativas y espaciales. Estas dimensiones identifican la permeabilidad de las fronteras mediante la exploración de cómo las fronteras separan o conectan cada lado. En este contexto, este estudio redefine las fronteras de una forma no normativa, utilizando su atributo de separación y conexión en relación con sus características de permeabilidad. También se analizan las características cambiantes de las fronteras, desde las barreras físicas a las regiones fronterizas, teniendo en cuenta la interacción socioeconómica y socioespacial. Como estudio empírico, se investigan las interacciones socioespaciales que definen la permeabilidad selectiva entre organismos supranacionales, estados nacionales y regiones fronterizas en las fronteras de la UE (Bulgaria y Grecia) y de Turquía, mediante la realización de entrevistas en profundidad con actores que tienen relaciones transfronterizas. 国境地域のリレーショナル構造を分析するために包括的な理解を深めるには、国境の透過性に関して、社会空間的相互作用の異なる側面を評価することが必要である。この枠組において、国境間および超国家組織の境界間に現れる関連性は、経済、社会、政治/行政、空間、以上の4つのカテゴリーにおいて測定することができる。これらの側面は、国境が双方をどのように分断し、また結合しているかを検討することにより、国境の透過性を確認する。本稿では、このコンテキストの範囲で、透過性の特徴に関連するその分断と結合の特性を用いて、非規範的に国境を再定義する。また、社会経済的および社会空間的な相互作用を検討し、物理的な障壁から国境地域へと変化する境界の特徴を分析する。実証的研究として、EU(ブルガリアとギリシャ)とトルコの国境において、国境を超えた関連性のあるアクターにインデプス・インタビューを行って超国家組織、国民国家、国境地域間の選択的透過性を定義する社会空間的相互作用を調査する。
