Mapping citizens' identification with the EU

Abstract: Do citizens show different patterns of European identification? Are the results driven by specific regional characteristics? Has Cohesion Policy an influence on EU citizens' identification? With the aim to answer these questions, we develop a novel probabilistic model that allows classification of citizens according to their different patterns of identification with Europe and the European project. This model exploits the heterogeneity of citizens' identification patterns across the European regions and how they are influenced by individual and regional characteristics. The results of the analysis at regional level are presented with regards to nine case‐study regions. The model builds on PERCEIVE's research results that develop the theoretical framework for the definition and measurement of the level of identification with EU and its drivers. ¿Muestran los ciudadanos diferentes patrones de identificación europea? ¿Están los resultados motivados por características regionales específicas? ¿Influye la política de cohesión en la identificación de los ciudadanos de la UE? Con el fin de responder a estas preguntas, desarrollamos un novedoso modelo probabilístico que permite clasificar a los ciudadanos en función de sus diferentes patrones de identificación con Europa y el proyecto europeo. Este modelo aprovecha la heterogeneidad de los patrones de identificación de los ciudadanos en las regiones europeas y la forma en que se ven influenciados por las características individuales y regionales. Los resultados del análisis a nivel regional se presentan en relación con nueve regiones como estudio de caso. El modelo se basa en los resultados de la investigación PERCEIVE, que desarrollan el marco teórico para la definición y medición del nivel de identificación con la UE y sus impulsores. 本稿では、市民はヨーロッパにおけるアイデンティフィケーションの異なるパターンを示すか、地域の特定の特性によって結果は左右されるか、結束政策はEU市民のアイデンティフィケーションに影響を及ぼすか、という疑問を解決するため、ヨーロッパとのアイデンティフィケーションおよびヨーロッパのプロジェクト(the European project)の異なるパターンに従って市民の分類を可能にする新しい確率モデルを開発する。このモデルにより、ヨーロッパの地域全体における市民のアイデンティフィケーションのパターンの不均一性と、市民がどのようにして個人および地域の特性に影響されるかを解明する。9つの地域のケーススタディで、地域レベルの分析の結果を示す。このモデルは、EUとのアイデンティフィケーションのレベルとその要因の定義と測定のための理論的枠組みを開発したPERCEIVEの研究結果に基づいている。
