Do agglomeration economies matter where natural endowments are? Lessons from Greece

Abstract: This paper examines whether the location factors related to the rich natural endowments of Greece (first nature of geography) affect those of the proximity to suppliers, similar firms and the capital (second nature of geography). It finds that geomorphology and climate reinforce all the second‐nature factors. Sea access favours firms’ linkages, and natural resources attract both firms’ linkages and localization economies. Nevertheless, the high‐quality natural environment of certain areas cannot coexist with localization and urbanization economies. These findings seem to be stronger for domestic than for foreign firms, while the differences between sectors are sensitive to the geography factors. Este artículo examina si los factores de localización relacionados con las ricas dotaciones naturales de Grecia (primera naturaleza de la geografía) afectan a los de la proximidad a los proveedores, las empresas similares y el capital (segunda naturaleza de la geografía). Se encontró que la geomorfología y el clima refuerzan todos los factores de segunda naturaleza. El acceso al mar favorece los vínculos entre las empresas, y los recursos naturales atraen tanto a los vínculos entre las empresas como a las economías de localización. Sin embargo, el entorno natural de alta calidad de ciertas zonas no puede coexistir con las economías de localización y urbanización. Estos resultados parecen ser más fuertes para las empresas nacionales que para las extranjeras, mientras que las diferencias entre sectores son sensibles a los factores geográficos. 本稿では、ギリシャの豊かな自然基盤に関連する立地要因 (地理の第1の性質)が、サプライヤー、同業者、資本 (地理の第2の性質)との近接性に影響を与えるかどうかを検討する。地形学と気候がすべての第2の性質に関する要因を強化することを見出した。海岸へのアクセスは企業のつながりを促進し、天然資源は企業のつながりとローカリゼーションの経済を引きつける。それにもかかわらず、ある地域の質の高い自然環境は、地域化や都市化の経済と共存できない。これらの知見は、国内企業の方が外国企業よりも顕著であるが、セクター間の違いは地理的要因に影響を受けやすい。
