Market competition and firm productivity and innovation: Responses in Mexican manufacturing industries

Abstract: This paper investigates the causal relationship between competition and firm innovation and the impact of competition on firm productivity in the Mexican manufacturing sector. We use the analytical framework proposed by Aghion et al. (2005) and evaluate their central hypothesis. We use firm‐level data from the Mexican manufacturing survey over the period 2009–2017. Our results show a negative linear relationship between competition and the intensity of firm innovation investment. These results are primarily due to the substantial technological disparity that exists across firms within sectors, where most firms compete very far from the leaders. Este artículo investiga la relación causal entre la competencia y la innovación de las empresas y el impacto de la competencia en la productividad de las empresas en el sector manufacturero mexicano. Se utilizó el marco analítico propuesto por Aghion et al. (2005) y se evaluó su hipótesis principal. Se usaron datos a nivel de empresa de la encuesta sobre la industria mexicana en el período 2009‐2017. Los resultados muestran una relación lineal negativa entre la competencia y la intensidad de la inversión en innovación de las empresas. Estos resultados se deben principalmente a la importante disparidad tecnológica que existe entre las empresas de un mismo sector, donde la mayoría de ellas compiten muy lejos de los líderes. 本稿では、メキシコの製造業における競争と企業のイノベーションの因果関係、および競争が企業の生産性に与える影響について分析する。Aghionら(2005)の分析フレームワークを用いて、その中心仮説を評価した。2009~2017年のメキシコの製造業のサーベイ調査の企業レベルのデータを用いて、競争と企業のイノベーションへの投資の厚さとの間に負の線形関係があることを示した。これらの結果は主に、同じセクター内の企業に広く存在する大きな技術格差によるものであり、ほとんどの企業はトップの企業から大きく離れたところで競争している。
