The spatial–temporal web of the Inhabited City

Abstract: This paper presents a philosophical reflection on space and the significance of urban living. Inspired by a close reading of Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life, the paper unveils some of its philosophical inspirations (e.g., Kant, Wittgenstein and Freud) and it elaborates on a notion of space that is grasped through narrative and the act of walking understood as ‘space opening’. In so doing, the paper unveils the limits of a cartographic depiction of space (as well as the limits of ‘theory’ itself) and, together with de Certeau, it explores the potentialities of a bodily and metaphoric interpretation of space. Este artículo presenta una reflexión filosófica sobre el espacio y el significado de la vida urbana. Inspirado en una lectura minuciosa de La invención de lo cotidiano de Michel de Certeau, el artículo revela algunas de sus inspiraciones filosóficas (p.ej. Kant, Wittgenstein y Freud) y trata en más detalle una noción de espacio que se capta a través de la narrativa y el acto de caminar, entendido como una ‘apertura del espacio’. De esta manera, el artículo muestra los límites de una representación cartográfica del espacio (así como los límites de la propia ‘teoría’) y, junto con de Certeau, explora las potencialidades de una interpretación corporal y metafórica del espacio. 本稿では、空間と都市生活の意義に関する哲学的省察を行う。Michel de CerteauのThe Practice of Everyday Lifeの精読から着想を得て、本稿では同書の哲学的なインスピレーションの一部 (例えば、カント、ウィトゲンシュタイン、フロイト)を明らかにし、本書を通じて捉えられている空間の概念と、「空間を作る (space opening)」と解される歩行という行動について詳しく述べる。これにより、本稿は空間の地図的描写の限界 (及び「理論」自体の限界も)を明らかにし、de Certeauと同じく、空間の身体的および比喩的解釈の可能性を探求する。
