Timescapes and the vernacular language of Cuba’s popular economies

Abstract: The aim of this article is to explore intersections between the ways different economies create new temporalities and how the need to navigate them affects the everyday lives of Cubans. Local understandings of work, technical and ethical approaches to time all play a role in the perception of marginality. As such, I explore how the predominant reliance on social networks and alternative means of subsistence affects work practices and more broadly defines daily realities of habaneros. I look closely at vernacular language that is used to describe economic practices, perceptions of the Cuban state and its presence in everyday economies. The article is based on a 9‐month ethnographic fieldwork dedicated to investigating everyday life of Havana’s informal settlements (llega y pon) and grassroots strategies of overcoming marginalization. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las intersecciones entre las formas en que las diferentes economías crean nuevas temporalidades y cómo la necesidad de transitar por ellas afecta a la vida cotidiana de los cubanos. La comprensión local de los enfoques laborales, técnicos y éticos sobre el tiempo influyen en la percepción de la marginalidad. De este modo, se explora cómo la dependencia predominante de las redes sociales y los medios alternativos de subsistencia afecta a las prácticas laborales y define más ampliamente las realidades cotidianas de los habaneros. El artículo se fija en el lenguaje vernáculo utilizado para describir las prácticas económicas, las percepciones del estado cubano y su presencia en las economías cotidianas. El estudio se basa en un trabajo de campo etnográfico de 9 meses dedicado a investigar la vida cotidiana de los asentamientos informales de La Habana (llega y pon) y las estrategias de base para superar la marginación. 本稿では、さまざまな経済が新しいテンポラリティーを作り出すときの共通点と、それらを導く必要性がキューバ市民の日常生活にどのように影響しているかを探索する。地域の仕事に対する理解、時間に対する技術的および倫理的姿勢はすべて、社会的無視 (marginality)の認識に関与している。そこで本稿では、ソーシャルネットワークと代替的な生活手段に大きく依存することが、どのように労働慣行に影響を与え、ハバナ市民の日常の現実をより広く定義するかを探索する。経済的慣習を言い表す現地語、キューバ国家に対する認識、日常的経済における国家の存在に注目する。本稿は、ハバナの非公式居住地 (llega y pon)における日常生活の調査と、社会的無視を克服するための草の根的な活動を行った9ヶ月間の民族誌的フィールドワークを基にしたものである。
