Cultural diversity, human capital, and regional economic growth in India

Abstract: The interaction of cultural diversity and human capital and their combined and conditional impacts on regional economic growth have not been explored in depth. The present study shows that India’s cultural diversity and human capital have significant impacts on regional economic growth, but the impact of cultural diversity declines with an increase in human capital stock and level of initial regional incomes. These findings are akin to the findings of other studies reporting varying impacts of human capital on economic growth with differing levels of economic development. This implies that the less developed regions, being farther from the technological frontier (Vandenbussche et al., 2006), display a stronger diversity‐led catch‐up effect. La interacción de la diversidad cultural y el capital humano y sus efectos combinados y condicionales sobre el crecimiento económico regional no se han explorado en profundidad. El presente estudio muestra que la diversidad cultural y el capital humano de la India tienen un impacto significativo en el crecimiento económico regional, pero el impacto de la diversidad cultural disminuye al aumentar las reservas de capital humano y el nivel de renta regional inicial. Estos resultados son similares a los de otros estudios que informan de los diferentes impactos del capital humano en el crecimiento económico con diferentes niveles de desarrollo económico. Esto implica que las regiones menos desarrolladas, al estar más alejadas de la frontera tecnológica (Vandenbussche et al., 2006), muestran un mayor efecto de convergencia impulsado por la diversidad. 文化的多様性と人的資本の相互作用、および地域経済成長に及ぼすそれらの組み合わせによる条件付きの影響については、十分に検討されていない。今回の研究から、インドの文化的多様性と人的資本が地域経済の成長に大きな影響を与えているが、人的資本ストックの増加と地域の総所得レベルの上昇に伴い、文化的多様性の影響は減少することが示された。この知見は、人的資本が経済成長にさまざまな影響を与え、経済発展のレベルが異なることを報告した他の研究の知見に類似している。これは、技術最先端から遠い後発地域(Vandenbussche et al、2006年)ほど多様性主導のキャッチアップ効果が強いことを示唆している。
