Regional heterogeneity and the effects of the related and unrelated varieties on innovation

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of the related and unrelated varieties on innovation considering regional heterogeneity across locations. Previous studies show that, in general, the related and unrelated varieties can affect innovation, but they rarely consider regional heterogeneity across locations. We use the regional knowledge production function with panel data on Brazilian microregions between 2002 and 2017 to analyse the effect of the related and unrelated varieties on innovation, considering the huge regional heterogeneity in Brazil. Our results show that the related variety is associated with both upper‐ and lower‐level innovation, while the unrelated variety has stronger effects on upper‐level innovation. Furthermore, the relationship between relatedness and innovation is different across Brazilian regions. El objetivo de este artículo es investigar los efectos de las variedades relacionadas y no relacionadas sobre la innovación teniendo en cuenta la heterogeneidad regional entre localidades. Los estudios previos muestran que, en general, las variedades relacionadas y no relacionadas pueden afectar a la innovación, pero rara vez tienen en cuenta la heterogeneidad regional entre lugares. Se utilizó la función regional de producción de conocimiento con datos de panel sobre microrregiones brasileñas entre 2002 y 2017 para analizar el efecto de las variedades relacionadas y no relacionadas sobre la innovación, teniendo en cuenta la enorme heterogeneidad regional en Brasil. Los resultados muestran que la variedad relacionada está asociada tanto con la innovación de nivel superior como con la de nivel inferior, mientras que la variedad no relacionada tiene efectos más fuertes sobre la innovación de nivel superior. Además, la relación entre el grado de relación y la innovación es diferente en las distintas regiones brasileñas. 本稿では、地域間の不均質性を考慮して、イノベーションに対する関連多様性と非関連多様性の影響を検討する。既存研究では、一般的に、関連多様性と非関連多様性がイノベーションに影響を与える可能性があることが示されているが、地域間の不均質性を考慮することはほとんどない。2002~2017年のブラジルの小地域に関するパネルデータを用いて、地域の知識の生産関数を用い、ブラジルにおける巨大地域の不均質性を考慮に入れ、イノベーションに対する関連多様性と非関連多様性の影響を分析した。結果から、関連多様性は上位レベルと下位レベルの両方のイノベーションに関連しており、非関連多様性は上位レベルのイノベーションに強い影響を与えることが分かった。しかし、多様性の関連/非関連性とイノベーションとの関連性はブラジルの各地域によって様々である。
