Regional development trap and economic complexity in Turkey: Evidence from provincial data

Abstract: This study aims to identify the provinces at risk of regional development traps in Turkey for the 2017–2021 period, as well as to uncover the statistical association between economic complexity and regional development traps. To achieve this, we calculated the modified regional development trap for Turkey by incorporating past regional performances and deviations from the national average. We also employed two different economic complexity measures derived from the literature. Our analysis indicates a negative correlation between regional development trap and economic complexity, suggesting that provinces with more complex productive structures may be less likely to fall into the trap. El objetivo de este estudio es identificar las provincias en riesgo de trampas de desarrollo regional en Turquía para el período 2017–2021, así como descubrir la asociación estadística entre la complejidad económica y las trampas de desarrollo regional. Para ello, se calcula la trampa de desarrollo regional modificada para Turquía incorporando los resultados regionales anteriores y las desviaciones respecto a la media nacional. También se emplean dos medidas diferentes de complejidad económica derivadas de la bibliografía. Nuestro análisis indica una correlación negativa entre la trampa de desarrollo regional y la complejidad económica, lo que sugiere que las provincias con estructuras productivas más complejas podrían tener menos probabilidades de caer en la trampa. 本研究では、2017~2021年に、地域開発の罠のリスクにさらされているトルコの県 (province)を特定し、経済の複雑さと地域開発の罠との統計的な関連性を明らかにする。この目的のために、過去の地域パフォーマンスと全国平均からの偏差値を組み込んで、トルコの修正地域開発トラップを計算した。また、既存研究から導出した2つの異なる経済的複雑性指標を用いた。我々の分析から、地域開発の罠と経済の複雑さにマイナスの相関性があることが示されたことから、より複雑な生産構造を持つ地方は罠に陥る可能性が低いことが示唆される。
